Composta da una piastra bipolare (BPP) e da un gruppo di elettrodi a membrana (MEA), ogni cella a combustibile della pila è collegata in serie ed è quindi fondamentale per la qualità complessiva del sistema. Una reazione chimica nell’assemblaggio elettrodo a membrana (MEA) è la fonte di energia elettrica nella pila. Due elettrodi sono posizionati su ciascun lato del MEA e ospitano i relativi catalizzatori. Questi elettrodi sono applicati su entrambi i lati della membrana (CCM) o sul rispettivo strato di diffusione del gas (CCL).

Analisi della qualità dei componenti
Oltre alla pila di celle a combustibile, molti altri componenti sono importanti per il sistema. L’idrogeno per la reazione chimica viene trasportato attraverso un sistema di tubazioni. L’ossigeno viene ricavato dall’aria ambiente e trattato con pompe, filtri, separatori d’acqua e altro ancora. L’efficienza del sistema di celle a combustibile dipende dall’elevata qualità dei componenti.
